My sister went to Thailand for a mission trip, and one part of her mission is to talk to girls who were sold into prostitution. In my worry I decided to look up more about human trafficking. In an article by Tina Frundt I became very aware that human trafficking doesn’t just happen in other countries but occurs in America as well; people are forced into human trafficking in many different ways.
Countries like Thailand, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Kuwait, Mexico, Russia, and many more, are well known for human trafficking. The biggest shocker to some is that America is actively on that list. Many people have been blind to the fact that human trafficking is happening right now on our own soil! The Human Trafficking Education website states that about 17,500 adults and children are brought into the US and forced into human trafficking each year.
Human Traffickers take these people in many different ways. Some people have been stolen and then sold into prostitution or to pimps. Some have started a relationship with a pimp, not knowing they were pimps and then were manipulated and forced into prostitution. Some have been taken from a different country, brought to America, and sold to a pimp or forced into prostitution.
The US Global Health Policy states that 12.3 million adults and children are forced into human trafficking. Yet only 4,166 successfully traffickers have been prosecuted in 2009. People need to become more aware of human trafficking and what a big deal it is in America as well. You can help fight against human trafficking by joining a human trafficking vigilance committee where you live; if there is not one where you live, than you can always start a committee. By coming together and fighting this heinous crime we can slowly put an end to it.
